Offline Journal #015
The latest issue #015 of Offline Journal looks at the important topic of where and when a photographer's work might be safely stored.
ARCHIVE is the theme for issue #015 – the biggest issue to date with 108 pages of photography and writing on photography in and beyond Wales. This ARCHIVE issue has 26 articles, many of which explore the approach and thinking by established photographers on preparing their work with a view to leaving it safe somewhere, somehow.
There are articles exploring the archives with bodies of work by Daniel Meadows, David Hurn, Ron McCormick, Jeremy Sutton-Hibbert, and Robert Greetham. And a discussion with Will Troughton, Curator of Photographs at the National Library of Wales which holds over a million photographs in its National Collection.
Three special articles delve into photography in music album art from Lucy Purrington, Alex Lloyd Jenkins and Mark McNulty – likely a form of photography, consciously or unconsciously, residing in many of our own private collections and has real emotional value and, perhaps, handed down to new generations. Two other articles look at very different long-term projects on rivers by Jim Cochrane and Eleri Griffiths - with portraiture as an important part.
There's a review by Ellie Macdonald on Paul Cabuts' Another Place photobook, a new Offline Essay on The Photobook as Archive by Brian Carroll, and a PROGREDIOR end piece by Owen Pritchard that considers whether Wales as a devolved nation with new political leadership values the cultural importance of photography now and going forward.
