Paul Reas @ FFOCWS 2022

Paul Reas is a photographer and former Course Leader on the Documentary Photography course at the University of South Wales in Cardiff. He was one of the first photographers commissioned for Ffotogallery’s ‘Valleys Project’ in the early 1980s.
Reas was one of several mentors on Ffotogallery’s FFOCWS 2022 scheme and the Higgins Photography Initiative in collaboration with Cardiff MADE - part of which had each mentor presenting a talk on their background and work.
The audio clips below were made at Paul’s talk hosted by Ffotogallery on Saturday 20 May 2023.
Prior to moving back into education in Wales, having previously studied on the original Newport Documentary Photography (DocPhot) course, Paul Reas worked on award-winning advertising campaigns and in editorial for many years in the UK. In the early part of his career he was one of the first photographers commissioned for Ffotogallery’s ‘Valleys Project’ in the early 1980s.

Reas is regarded as one of Britain’s influential ‘New Colour’ photographers from the mid-1980’s alongside Anna Fox, Martin Parr and Paul Graham. His work has been exhibited in several exhibitions and he has published books of his work, the most recent being ‘Fables of Faubus’ (GOST Books, 2018). His work is represented by the James Hyman Gallery in London.
There’s a wide selection of Paul’s work on his very excellent and comprehensive website www.paulreas.com
