Photography events in Wales pre-Santa

Hello again

A quick reminder of things happening in photography in Wales this side of Santa’s arrival.

There has been a great response to the new SIGNATURES talk event next Saturday 14 December in The Turner House gallery in Penarth - with only 6 free tickets remaining! see below…

Brian

‘SIGNATURES’ - last few tickets!

Whilst these events are free to attend, the gallery space has a limited seating capacity and we’ve therefore decided to ticket the event. You can secure a free ticket using the button below.

These new SIGNATURES talks aim to encourage more discussion around photography in photobooks and bring photographers, and anyone interested in photography and publishing, together in relaxed afternoon events.

For this first event, artist and photographer ROBERT GREETHAM and I will discuss his RITES & TRACES book, self-published in 2021.

And DAVID HURN together with Josie Atkinson, publisher at RRB Photobooks, will discuss the background to the decades of photography featured in his brand new ON READING photobook - making its first public appearance at this event in Turner House in Penarth.

Copies of both books will be available to buy at the event.

I’d encourage photographers with their own photozines to bring them along to show others at the event, and/or offer them for sale to other attendees - and maybe discuss and explore potential future collaborations!

Some contents from the growing Box of Zines collection
It’s also an opportunity to browse and add your own photozine to ‘The Box of Zines’ which will be at the event - a collection of self-published zines from Wales (and beyond) that’s been steadily growing since it was started in late 2023 by Offline Journal and the Photography department at the University of South Wales (USW). All zines in the box are catalogued.

I’m looking for one more volunteer who might help out at the event - nothing onerous, just helping with setting up seating and refreshments. Please drop me an email at offline.journal@gmail.com if you’d be interested.

Between now and early January 2025 when THE VALLEYS exhibition ends, I’ll be posting individual stories behind the images, narrated by the photographers themselves, here on Offline Journal newsletters and then collecting them all onto a dedicated page. I’d like to thank the photographers who responded by recording their own story and supplied the corresponding image. Do try to go along and see the exhibition in Museum Cardiff as the range of photography (and art) on show is impressive.

TRANSITIONAL ECHOES - exhibition in Porth

Photographer Gawain Barnard, who hails from the Valleys, is currently showing a selection of BIG prints from his Transitional Echoes series in The Factory in Porth.

Describing the exhibition, Barnard states:

Transitional Echoes explores landscape and place relating to the shifting memories of a post-industrial South Wales. My work floats between the boundaries of documentary and mythical construct in a way that merges pre-conceived notions of a Welsh landscape; part post-industrial and part folktale. What emerges is a memory-laden landscape, familiar yet fictitious.

MARIAN DELYTH TALK

Marian Delyth discussing her work in Ffotogallery

Photographer Marian Delyth gave a very informative ‘Walk & Talk’ through her ‘Darnau | Fragments’ exhibition in Ffotogallery in Cardiff on Saturday 23 November.

I attended the event with a small microphone to capture Marian’s talk and happy to share the audio here on the Offline Journal newsletter.
