"Through photography, moving image and performance, ExtraLegal questions the morality of modern day legal systems. Featuring a group of international artists, this exhibition challenges the photograph’s use as documentary evidence whilst exposing the realities of conflicts, transitions, institutions and the limits of the law within these". – BayArt website

Cwm Eigiau: Y Wal Heb Sylfaen

Cover of the new catalog 006 that will accompany Cwm Eigiau: Y Wal Heb Sylfaen

This coming 2 November will mark 100-years since the failure of two dams causing a flood that swamped the village of Dolgarrog in North Wales, killing 16 people. Decades in the making, a body of work by photographer and educator Aled Rhys Hughes documents the scarred, stark and imposing man-made remote structure that failed, ultimately causing the disaster.

Following a selection of the photographs being shown in Colwyn Bay as part of the Northern EYE Festival's exhibition programme, a new exhibition titled Cwm Eigiau: Y Wal Heb Sylfaen / The Wall Without Foundation will launch in Ffotogaleri y Gofeb and Pen'rallt Gallery and Bookshop in Machynlleth on Saturday 25 October 2025

In collaboration with Aled and Ffotogaleri y Gofeb, Offline Journal is proud to publish an exhibition catalogue, the sixth in Offline's catalog series, as a fitting memento of this exhibition – available from the gallery later next week, and direct from the Offline Journal online store in late November.

Deaf education in Kenya and Wales

Kenyan filmmaker Joan Kabugu and Newport-based photojournalist Glenn Edwards met eight years ago on a commission when documenting Kambui School for the Hearing Impaired, an hour’s drive from Nairobi, Kenya. Photographs and a film titled ‘Feel the Vibe’ were produced looking at the power of the sound of drumming in the school’s dance groups.

Joan Kabugu has continued to film the deaf community as well as producing other award-winning documentary projects, and Glenn has travelled throughout Africa working for various clients on humanitarian issues.

Last year they decided to work together again on the Mafilo Festival highlighting the differences in deaf education in Kenya and Wales, telling the story of a young female student named Nduku at Machakos School for the Deaf in Kenya, and a male student named Dan at St Cyres School in Penarth. Another separate element of the project was to raise awareness of deaf creatives in both countries.

This work was shown in Nairobi earlier this month and will be at The Temple of Peace in Cardiff on Saturday 25th October starting at 1pm when two films and the images will be exhibited. All welcome.

Thanks to The British Council Kenya for funding the project.

EYE FESTIVAL 2025 SUCCESS

Last weekend, Saturday 18 - Sunday 19 October, had attendees enjoy the 2025 EYE Festival, hosted once again at Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Mid Wales.

Founded thirteen years ago by photographer Glenn Edwards in collaboration with Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales' longest-running photography festival has maintained its guest speaker weekend format that, back in 2017, inspired the Northern EYE Festival in North Wales.

This years guest speaker lineup was Denise Maxwell, Simon Norfolk, Harry Borden, Joel Goodman, Eileen Perrier in conversation with Daniel Meadows, and Jenny Matthews. Successive speaker lineups have reflected festival Director Glenn Edwards' inclusion of professional photojournalists and commercial photographers as storytellers.

However, more than a decade on from the first event, and with challenges ahead for photojournalism and traditional documentary photography, the festival is now assessing how it might deliver its biannual event programme and attract new audiences.

Speaking to Offline Journal this week, festival Director and co-founder Glenn Edwards said...

"After another weekend of inspiring talks from some of the worlds best image makers, The EYE Festival can only look back with pride at the content and entertainment it has provided since its inception in 2012. Although it may not continue in its present format in the future, The EYE will continue – and hopefully retain a presence in Aberystwyth".

Keep an eye on the EYE Festival website and Instagram feed for updates...

TO BUILD A HOME: new book from Amanda Jackson

At long last, Amanda Jackson's long-term project on the setting and community that form the Lammas Tir Y Gafel eco village in Pembrokeshire is coming to the printed page.

'To Build A Home' will be published by Another Place Press in December and brings together Jackson's work from 2013 to present, and exhibited previously as two exhibitions: 'To Build A Home' and ‘Where the Red Kite Flies(the cover and feature article in Offline Journal #009).

I was lucky to get glimpse of the near-final layout of the book at the recent Northern EYE Festival in Colwyn Bay and it looks fantastic (unsurprising given Amanda's close attention to detail!).

Pre-orders for To Build A Home are open now, with two versions of the book available as book only for the very, very reasonable price of £24, or a Special Edition, limited to 15 copies - each with an A4 limited edition print signed and numbered by the photographer. Back and secure a copy of the book using the button below!

DAVID HURN - TINTERN TALK

Despite moving to Tintern in Monmouthshire in the early 1970's after relocating from London, the Magnum photographer of nearly sixty years has only recently given a talk on his life and work to an audience of fellow locals and visitors.

David Hurn agreed to an 'in conversation' talk with writer Mark McCrum (also a resident of Tintern) in the Village Hall, Tintern on Friday 5 September 2025 for an event in support of the conservation efforts for the ancient St Mary's Church close to Tintern Abbey.

The talk was filmed by both myself and Swansea-based photographer Adam Davies and has been added to the Ffoton Wales YouTube channel.

For those unfamiliar with Ffoton, it was co-founded by photographer Emyr Young and Offline Journal's Brian Carroll in late 2014, with the podcast and original website launching in February 2015. Ffoton is the first and longest-running podcast dedicated to celebrating talented photographers in, and associated with, Wales.
