Hello again
The rain has joined the dark nights these past few days (at least in Cardiff) but there's still lots of distractions on the photography front that may pique your interest.
Here are a few...

ExtraLegal : now showing

'ExtraLegal : The law, the document and the photograph' is now showing in BayArt gallery on Bute Street in Cardiff Bay.
"Through photography, moving image and performance, ExtraLegal questions the morality of modern day legal systems. Featuring a group of international artists, this exhibition challenges the photograph’s use as documentary evidence whilst exposing the realities of conflicts, transitions, institutions and the limits of the law within these". – BayArt website

Cwm Eigiau: Y Wal Heb Sylfaen / The Wall Without Foundation

Sunday 2 November 2025 marked 100-years since the failure of two dams causing a flood that swamped the village of Dolgarrog in North Wales, killing 16 people.
Revisiting the site over decades, Aled Rhys Hughes' images of the stark and imposing man-made remote structure that failed, are now showing in a new exhibition titled Cwm Eigiau: Y Wal Heb Sylfaen / The Wall Without Foundation in Ffotogaleri y Gofeb and Pen'rallt Gallery and Bookshop in Machynlleth until 7 March 2026.

A window into classic photojournalism: a review

Buzz Magazine's website is now carrying a review of the PICTURE POST: A Twentieth Century Icon exhibition currently showing in National Museum Cardiff until Sunday 9 December 2025.
Written by Ben Woolhead, the article makes an interesting read – weaving the story of Picture Post's appearance just prior to World War II, and its coverage of many world events (including here in Wales) by famous photographers.
FFOTOGALLERY BOOK FAIR

Congratulations to Ffotogallery on an enjoyable and, hopefully for those who manned a table with their work, successful Photobook Fair on Saturday 25 October.
There was a wide variety of photography and art being shown and sold in book form – from handmade photozines and prints, to new and second-hand published titles.

In addition to the Offline Journal table, Ffotogallery provided a larger table to display a big selection of self-published photozines from around Wales that constitute the ever-expanding 'Box of Zines'. Safe to say we're going to need a bigger box – since two new titles contributed by @mckenny.photography and @daiphototea have now effectively filled the original box. Thanks both!
We're always on the lookout for new photozines being created in Wales to join the collection that travels around photography events.

MO HASSAN BOOK TALK

I had the pleasure of speaking with photographer Mohamed Hassan during Ffotogallery's Photobook Fair about his first photobook 'OUR HIDDEN ROOM'.
Organised by Ffotogallery, the talk was scheduled as part of their October event shortly after the book's unveiling by the three publishers (RM, Phree, and Ediciones Posibles) at the Sant Jordi Book Festival in Barcelona earlier this year. Mohamed—Mo—has since talked on, and exhibited work from, the book in Spain, Italy and Slovenia, but this was his first opportunity to discuss it in-depth here in Wales.

Our conversation on the book, a tribute to his Egyptian father who was a studio photographer, covers the story of Mo's own journey into photography, the combination of archive and new imagery when planning the book as part of his MA Degree, his resulting book dummy winning the 2024 STAR Photobook Dummy Award, and our collaboration when he asked me to work with him in designing the final book for printing in early 2025.

'OUR HIDDEN ROOM' has been shortlisted in the 'First Photobook' category of the 2025 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards. You can see the full finalists listing on the Aperture website. Winners will be announced in a ceremony at Paris Photo, 3pm (CET) Friday 14 November 2025.
