#26: October '21 events update

Photography events around Wales during October 2021

Northern EYE Festival

The Northern EYE Photography Festival delivered yet again this past weekend in Colwyn Bay with a fantastic line-up of guest speakers and a very enthusiastic audience of attendees.

It was very encouraging to see so many people attend the event and, as with both EYE festivals in Wales, be so friendly and join in with social events like the ‘everybody welcome’ Curry night!

Festival Director Paul Sampson from Oriel Colwyn, Daniel Meadows and Jack Lowe - standing in front of a massive multi-sheet poster of one of Jack’s ‘Lifeboat Station Project’ collodion images made in North Wales.

As part of the Fringe exhibitions staged around the town of Colwyn Bay, photographer and festival guest speaker Jack Lowe spent days installing several large multi-sheet posters of Lifeboat Station crews from his ongoing Lifeboat Station Project - featured in the latest issue #007 of Offline Journal.

The fantastic effort by Oriel Colwyn curator and Northern EYE Festival director Paul Sampson has to be applauded - he organises the festival every two years with no staff and just a few local volunteers to help put up the fringe exhibitions around the town.

If you missed the Northern EYE Festival - there is still time to book a ticket for this coming weekend’s EYE International Photography Festival in Aberystwyth. As with the Northern EYE, you have the choice this year to attend in person or watch the guest speaker weekend via a live stream.

New Offline FOLIO exhibition posters

Offline has been collaborating with several smaller photography galleries around Wales to produce FOLIO Exhibition Posters for selected exhibitions.

The latest is The Expressive Land to accompany the exhibition of the same name by photographer Pete Davis now showing at Ffotogaleri y Gofeb in Machynlleth, Mid Wales. See exhibition dates in the listing below.

Each Offline FOLIO poster is A2 size folded to A4 and printed full colour.

You can secure a copy of The Expressive Land through a Subscriber+ 2-issue subscription to Offline Journal - www.offline.wales/subscribe

Swaps - the mini version in HAY-on-Wye

In addition to the larger Swaps exhibition opening 23 October in National Museum Cardiff showing David Hurn’s swaps with other Magnum members and nominees, the photographer has also been collaborating with Thru The Lens Gallery in Hay-on-Wye. ‘Photographed: Inspired, Swapped & Bought’ runs 7 October - 13 November 2021 and will reveal other photographs Hurn swapped with not just photographers but also artists - receiving paintings and ceramics etc in return.

I’m delighted to have been asked by the gallery to design the exhibition poster (top), and also collaborate with the photographer and gallery to produce an exclusive new A2-size FOLIO exhibition poster (above) to accompany the show - copies of which will be available direct from the gallery, and from Offline at a later date.

There will be an opening event at the gallery from 6pm on Friday 15 October, with David Hurn attending. All welcome.
